Djibouti allows for the sale of Kenyan miraa products
Kenyan Miraa Exports Expand to Djibouti
Kenyan miraa exporters now have a new market to explore, as Djibouti has opened its doors to the lucrative stimulant crop. This development, announced by the Agriculture and Food Authority (AFA), marks a "major milestone in diversifying Kenya's miraa export markets."
Located in the Horn of Africa, Djibouti serves as a vital maritime gateway, with direct access to the Gulf of Aden and the broader Indian Ocean. This strategic position makes it an attractive market for Kenyan miraa, also known as khat.
To access the Djibouti market, Kenyan exporters must adhere to several regulations. They are required to obtain necessary import permits from Djibouti, meet specific product standards set by the Djiboutian authorities, and comply with Kenya’s export regulations. This ensures that the miraa meets quality and safety standards, and that the export operations run smoothly.
The new market opportunity is significant for farmers and traders of the miraa crop. The new pricing structures represent a substantial adjustment from previous rates. Grade 1 miraa is now priced at Sh1,300 per kilogramme, Grade 2 at Sh700, and Alele at Sh1,000.
This development follows bilateral trade engagements in 2024, which culminated in a formal agreement between Kenya and Djibouti facilitating legal and regulated market access for miraa exports. The market access was secured after a Kenyan trade mission visited Djibouti in October last year, followed by a reciprocal visit from a Djibouti delegation in November 2024.
Somalia maintained its position as the primary destination for Kenyan miraa in 2024, with beyond Somalia, Kenyan miraa also found markets in Sierra Leone, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Angola, Mozambique, and Israel. In total, Kenya's miraa exports reached 4.777 metric tonnes (MT) in 2024.
Djibouti, a small nation of about one million people occupying an area of around 23,200 sq km, is poised to become an important player in Kenya's miraa export market. Exporters are encouraged to connect with buyers in Djibouti and take advantage of this new market opportunity.
