DOE Approves Sempra's Port Arthur LNG Phase 2 for Non-FTA Exports
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has given the green light to Sempra Energy's Port Arthur LNG Phase 2 project, allowing exports to non-Free Trade Agreement (non-FTA) countries. This comes as U.S. LNG exports hit record highs, with Europe and Asia driving the surge.
In September 2024, Europe received a significant portion of U.S. LNG exports, totaling about 66%. Asia followed with approximately 17%. Texas contributed around 31% of these exports, while Louisiana accounted for a substantial 61%. Between September 3 and October 1, Louisiana's export terminals saw 81 LNG tankers depart, representing 67% of total U.S. shipments during this period.
Cheniere Energy led the majority of U.S. LNG exports in 2024. Venture Global's Calcasieu Pass LNG project was recently approved to increase its liquefaction capacity to 12.4 million tons per year. Commonwealth's LNG facility in Cameron Parish, Louisiana, was authorized to export up to 1.21 billion cubic feet of natural gas per day to non-FTA countries. Cheniere Energy's Sabine Pass facility in the same region shipped 32 cargos in September 2024.
September 2024 saw record overseas purchases of U.S. LNG, driven by strong sales to Europe and Asia. With the DOE's final authorization, Sempra Energy's Port Arthur LNG Phase 2 project is set to further boost U.S. LNG exports to non-FTA countries.
