Dubai begins a new initiative to convert waste cooking oil into fuel for diesel engines

Dubai has embarked on a new initiative to collect used cooking oil (UCO) and fats, oils, and grease (FOG) from households and restaurants across the emirate. This city-wide collection program is managed by BiOD Technology, a subsidiary of DUBAL Holding, authorized by Dubai Municipality.

The collected waste oil will be processed and converted into B100 biodiesel, a renewable and cleaner-burning fuel alternative that helps reduce carbon emissions and supports Dubai’s environmental sustainability goals.

The partnership between Dubai Municipality and BiOD Technology marks an exciting step forward in promoting sustainable waste management and innovative recycling solutions. The initiative is part of a public-private partnership formalized by a Memorandum of Understanding, highlighting the collaboration between the two entities to promote sustainable waste-to-energy solutions.

Pilot operations are expected to commence in 2026, with each tonne of produced biodiesel projected to reduce approximately 3.2 tonnes of CO₂ emissions, contributing significantly to lowering the emirate’s carbon footprint. This project also aims to lower wastewater treatment operational costs by preventing grease-related sewer clogs while producing eco-friendly energy.

Restaurants and commercial kitchens, significant producers of waste oil, will play a key role in the collection process. The project directly impacts households and restaurants across Dubai.

Ahmed bin Fahad Al Muhairi, Chairman of the Board of BiOD Technology, emphasizes the partnership's focus on sustainable innovation and tangible environmental improvements. Shiva Vig, CEO of BiOD Technology, highlights the use of cutting-edge technology and industry expertise to transform UCO and FOG into high-quality, renewable biodiesel.

The conversion of waste into a valuable energy resource is expected to protect vital infrastructure, reduce environmental risks, and contribute to Dubai's Vision 2030 for environmental sustainability. The project supports the UAE’s Green Economy goals, aiming to reduce the environmental footprint and operational costs of wastewater treatment.

Adel Al Marzooqi, CEO of the Waste and Sewerage Agency at Dubai Municipality, stated that the partnership represents a significant step in advancing Dubai's environmental agenda. The initiative is the latest in a series of sustainable efforts by Dubai aimed at making the emirate a regional leader in waste-to-energy innovation.

The MoU between Dubai Municipality and BiOD Technology is a significant step forward in public-private collaboration, paving the way for scalable and high-impact environmental solutions. The partnership promotes the circular economy and protects Dubai's infrastructure and environment, according to Dubai Municipality. The new agreement was formalized in the presence of senior officials from Dubai Municipality and BiOD Technology.
