Eastern Kazakhstan Plans New Construction of Hydroelectric Power Station

A new hydroelectric power plant is set to be constructed on the Kalzhyr River in the Markakol district of Eastern Kazakhstan. The project, announced by Nurlan Ramazanov, the head of the energy and housing and public utilities department of the East Kazakhstan Region, on January 8, aims to advance green energy initiatives in the region.

The power plant, which is the fifth such project in the region, will be operated by Kalzhyr River Energy LLC, a company that won the rights to build and operate the plant through a competitive auction. The company JSC "KazHydroProject" has received the rights to construct and operate the 16-megawatt hydropower plant.

The hydroelectric power plant is expected to supply sufficient energy to the entire district during flood periods, improving the region's energy security and playing a key role in reducing dependence on traditional energy sources. The plant's output will be integrated into Kazakhstan's unified energy system.

The location of the power plant is not specified beyond being in the Markakol district of Eastern Kazakhstan. A map of the location was designed by The Astana Times, with photo credit for the map going to dknews.kz.

The project is anticipated to generate hundreds of jobs, contributing to the local economy. It is part of Kazakhstan's overall strategy for green energy development. The specific green energy initiatives the project is intended to support are not detailed.

The construction of the hydroelectric power plant is expected to be completed within five years, with the project expected to finish by 2030. The announcement of the project was reported by Kazinform on January 8.
