Election official in North Carolina taken into custody, allegedly lacing granddaughters' ice cream with illicit substances
North Carolina State Elections Official Resigns After Controversial Incident
In a surprising turn of events, James Edwin Yokeley Jr., aged 66, resigned as chairman of the Surry County Board of Elections in North Carolina following an incident at a local Dairy Queen.
According to reports, video evidence from the Dairy Queen shows Yokeley placing pills into his granddaughters' ice cream. The pills were later identified as illegal narcotics, but fortunately, the granddaughters did not consume them.
Yokeley's resignation came after he was arrested and accused of spiking his granddaughters' ice cream with illicit narcotics. In a statement, Yokeley expressed confidence that he would be exonerated of all accusations.
State Auditor Dave Boliek, who appointed Yokeley to the Surry County elections board in June of the previous year, called for his resignation.
Before his resignation, Yokeley was known for his grievances with national Covid policies and whether votes in the 2020 federal elections were properly counted. He used his campaign's social media accounts to advocate anti-vaccine stances, even after falling short in the 2022 Surry County Board of Education race.
On December 7, 2022, Yokeley claimed on social media that Covid vaccines have caused more adverse effects and deaths than all previous vaccines combined, without providing evidence. He also cited Children's Health Defense, an anti-vaccine activist group, and claimed a "wave of justice is swelling against employers" mandating vaccination against Covid.
Despite his controversial views, Yokeley did not have publicly documented political positions before resigning as a state-appointed election official in North Carolina. Available information focuses on criminal charges against him rather than his political views.
It's important to note that studies have overwhelmingly demonstrated that Covid vaccines are safe and effective, and that most side effects are mild or moderate.
The arrest occurred on August 8, 2023, and Yokeley submitted a resignation letter, stating that stepping down was in the best interest of the State Board of Elections. The incident took place at a Dairy Queen, approximately 4 miles away from a Sheetz gas station.
T.J. Bledsoe won the 2022 Surry County Board of Education District 4 race, replacing Yokeley.
As the investigation into Yokeley's actions continues, the community awaits the outcome with interest. It's a reminder that those in positions of power must uphold the highest standards of conduct, especially when it comes to the safety and wellbeing of children.
