ENGIE UK's New Energy Centre in Newcastle to Save 30,000 Tonnes of Carbon

ENGIE UK has inaugurated a new carbon-reduction energy centre in Newcastle. This £20m low carbon scheme aims to save over 30,000 tonnes of carbon over 40 years. The facility is part of a wider plan by ENGIE and Newcastle City Council to develop and operate more district energy schemes within the city.

The energy centre supplies heating and cooling to 10 buildings and up to 450 homes via a 5km network of underground pipes. It generates chilled water, cooling facilities, and electricity using low carbon and cost-effective energy solutions. This is part of the Regenerate Newcastle partnership, which includes innovative energy projects like renewable energy hubs, advanced battery storage solutions, and community-led solar power initiatives.

The centre was funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and the Government's Local Growth Deal through the North East Local Enterprise Partnership. This investment demonstrates the region's commitment to reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable energy.
