German Railways (DB) is gearing up to construct a brand-new freight line across the cities of Nuremberg and Fürth. This exciting project is set to kickstart in 2026, as main construction tenders are currently being awarded, DB revealed. The line will stretch from Nuremberg to Eltersdorf, with two of the three construction sections already having the necessary permits in hand.

The main objective of this new construction is to ease the burden on existing lines and ensure smoother, more punctual passenger trains. The approximately 15-kilometer new line is designed to alleviate the railway junction in Fürth, significantly improving the overall quality of rail traffic. The section between Fürth and Nuremberg is one of the busiest routes in Bavaria, and transferring freight trains to this line will create more room for passenger trains on the existing line, a crucial transportation artery in Bavaria and Munich-Berlin high-speed line routes.

Reducing noise from freight traffic will be another key benefit of the new construction. To this end, Deutsche Bahn plans to host three information events for affected residents to discuss the impacts of the new construction, including noise and vibration. The new line, which will partially run under the A73 motorway, is being designed to substantially lower noise levels.

Historically, Nuremberg and Fürth have been significant cities in Germany's rail traffic. The two cities were connected through the first railway line in the country, opened in 1835. Only a year later, the first freight transport took place, with the transportation of two barrels of beer. This new freight line construction aims to modernize the infrastructure while preserving the region's rich railway history.

Community policy should be revised to address the potential increased finance required for the vocational training of workers who will operate the new freight line. This vocational training will be essential to ensure the smooth running of the new line and maintain the efficiency of the industry.

As the new freight line in Nuremberg and Fürth will dominated by trains carrying goods, it could stimulate local businesses and encourage vocational training programs in related industries, such as logistics and transportation.
