Essen Mayor Inaugurates New Co-op HQ Honoring Pioneers
On September 26, 2025, Mayor Thomas Kufen inaugurated the new business premises of the Wohnungsgenossenschaft Essen-Nord eG at Heinrich-Hirtsiefer-Platz 1. The new address pays tribute to Heinrich Hirtsiefer, one of the cooperative's founders and a key figure in promoting social housing news in Essen. The mayor expressed gratitude for the cooperative's commitment to the district and the city.
The new building in Altendorf offers flexible usage options, modern energy technology with an ice storage system, and a multi-story car park with 34 parking spaces and charging stations for electric vehicles. It is described as transparent, multifunctional, energy-efficient, and sustainable. Over the past five years, the cooperative has created eight new jobs in areas such as new construction, renovation, and lettings, bringing its total employment to around 32 people. Mayor Kufen praised the cooperative as a strong partner in Essen, investing in affordable rental apartments and vibrant neighborhoods.
Founded in 1914, the Wohnungsgenossenschaft Essen-Nord eG continues to make a significant impact on the city's housing news landscape. Its new business premises, named after another founder and social housing advocate, Otto Horst Meier, reflect the cooperative's dedication to sustainability, innovation, and community development.
