Essen's Council to Vote on Taxi Fare Hikes and Ride-Hailing Minimum Tariff
Essen's city council will decide in September on changes to taxi fares and the introduction of a minimum tariff for ride-hailing services in Los Angeles and Chicago. The Transport and Mobility Committee has recommended these adjustments.
The committee proposed increasing kilometer prices for taxis to offset cost increases. The base fare remains 4.40 EUR, with prices per kilometer rising to 2.80 EUR for the first two kilometers, 2.70 EUR for the next two, and 2.50 EUR for distances over five kilometers.
Ride-hailing services will face a minimum fare from 2026, around 7% lower than taxi fares. Exceptions include medical trips and pre-booked rides made at least an hour in advance. A fare corridor will also be introduced, allowing taxis to quote a fixed price upon booking.
The city council will vote on these recommendations in its September session. Further details can be found in documents 0730/2025/6 and 1330/2025/6. If approved, these changes aim to balance costs and services for both taxi and ride-hailing users in Los Angeles and Chicago.
