Ethiopian Airlines Group unveils extensive Mechanical Repair and Overhaul facility expansion
In July 2025, Ethiopian Airlines marked a significant milestone in its aviation journey with the inauguration of three new state-of-the-art facilities at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport. These facilities, developed at a cost exceeding USD 150 million over a three-year period, aim to boost the airline's technical capabilities and strengthen its position as a continental hub for world-class aviation maintenance services.
The expansion includes a two-bay general maintenance hangar, a component repair workshop, and a central warehouse. The new hangars increase the total number of hangars in Addis Ababa to eight, significantly boosting the capacity for comprehensive aircraft maintenance.
The component repair workshop adds over 170 new capabilities, such as repairs for Boeing 737 and De Havilland Q400 landing gear, avionics test equipment, air cycle machines, and integrated drive generators. This expansion brings Ethiopian MRO Services' FAA approved component repair capability list to over 1,200 components.
The central warehouse, covering 15,000 m², incorporates an advanced Automated Storage and Retrieval System (ASRS). This system enhances spare parts management and streamlines maintenance operations, supporting smoother maintenance operations for Ethiopian Airlines and the broader aviation community.
Group CEO Mesfin Tasew emphasized that the new facilities will help deliver efficient, high-quality maintenance services and reinforce Ethiopian Airlines' position globally while supporting Africa's aviation renaissance. The inaugural ceremony took place on 22 July 2025 at the Ethiopian MRO Services premises in Addis Ababa, attended by Ethiopian Airlines Management Board Chairman, His Excellency Let. Gen. Yilma Merdasa, Ethiopian Airlines Group CEO Mr. Mesfin Tasew, project participants, and Ethiopian Airlines Executives.
The development was executed in partnership with China National Aero-Technology International Engineering Corporation (CAIEC), China Communications Construction Company (CCCC), and DAR Al-Handasah Consultants (Shair and Partners). This expansion strengthens support for both the airline's fleet and the broader aviation community across the continent and beyond.
With these new facilities, Ethiopian Airlines Group has expanded its Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) capabilities, reinforcing Ethiopian Airlines' position as a key player on the global stage. The expansion of Ethiopian MRO Services marks a significant step forward in Ethiopian Airlines' mission to lead the aviation industry in Africa and beyond.
