Oxfam: Billionaires in the EU are getting richer - EU Billionaires' Wealth Surges 405 Billion Euros in 2025, Sparking Taxation Calls
The wealth of billionaires in the European Union (EU) surged by 405 billion euros in the first half of 2025, according to recent data. This increase has sparked calls for heavier taxation of the super-rich, with 25 social and welfare associations in Berlin advocating for the move on October 9, 2025.
The wealth disparity in the EU is stark. The richest 3,600 individuals possess as much wealth as the poorest 181 million people, a group roughly the size of Germany, Italy, and Spain combined. This concentration of wealth has grown, with the number of billionaires in the EU rising to 487 in 2025, up from 448 the previous year. At this rate, a new billionaire emerges every nine days. Oxfam is among those pushing for a more equitable distribution, urging EU governments to tax the wealthy more heavily.
The growing wealth of EU billionaires and the increasing gap between the rich and the poor have led to calls for increased taxation of the super-rich. With the number of billionaires rising and wealth disparity becoming more pronounced, the debate on wealth redistribution is set to continue.
