EU Finds Chinese BEV Producers Unfairly Subsidized, Tariffs Loom

The European Union (EU) has provisionally concluded that Chinese battery electric vehicle (BEV) producers benefit from 'unfair subsidisation'. This finding threatens EU producers and could lead to tariffs on Chinese BEV imports.

The EU Commission has chosen representatives from the Chinese Ministry of Commerce and the China Automotive Technology and Research Center (CATARC) to negotiate and resolve this subsidy conflict. If no agreement is reached, provisional tariffs have been pre-disclosed.

Volkswagen Group's joint venture with SAIC, SAIC-VW, may be impacted by these potential tariffs. BYD, Geely, and SAIC could face additional tariffs of 17.4%, 20%, and 38.1% respectively on their BEV imports to the EU. Tesla, too, may receive an individually calculated duty rate once definitive tariffs are imposed.

The EU's provisional findings and potential tariffs on Chinese BEV imports could significantly impact the global automotive market. These measures aim to protect EU producers and level the playing field in the BEV industry.
