Booming Geothermal Power in Lower Saxony: A Deep Dive

Increasing Number of Geothermal Plants in Lower Saxony Region - Expansion of Geothermal Power Stations in Lower Saxony

Embrace the earth's fiery core as Lower Saxony goes all in on geothermal energy! The state's geothermal game is stronger than ever, thanks to a whopping 26,600 shallow geothermal plants now operational. This number doubled just within the past four years, according to the State Office for Mining, Energy, and Geology in Hannover.

But guess what? The geothermal gold rush has slowed down a tad. New installations have seen a drop from a record high of approximately 2,500 per year in 2022 to 1,500 in 2024. But fear not, because these new plants are mightier than their smaller siblings, extracting energy from deeper subterranean depths.

Take a seat, because the man in charge, Hans-Jürgen Brauner,Geothermal Service's Head honcho at LBEG, dishes out the deets: "The fewer yet larger plants indicate a shift in construction scenariosthan in prior years." These behemoths carry more than 30 kilowatts of heating capacity and account for around 650 large-scale plants scattered across the state. A whopping 80 of these big boys were built in 2024 alone!

Emsland, Hannover, Cloppenburg, Harburg, Osnabrück, and Bentheim districts are leading the charge, with each district boasting over a thousand plants. However, geothermal technology hasn't yet burrowed its way into the hearts of the Harz, Lüneburger Heide, Wendland, and Solling regions, mostly due to their low population density.

The LBEG gathered and analyzed data from the relevant licensing authorities to compile this study.

Let's take a peek at what's going deep beneath Lower Saxony:

Now, you might be wondering about deep geothermal plants. Sadly, the numbers for 2024 remain elusive, but keep an eye out for further updates. Regardless, Lower Saxony's future as a renewable energy powerhouse burns brighter than ever.

The community policy needs to address the increasing demand for trained specialists in the geothermal industry in Lower Saxony. The employment policy should focus on attracting finance and investments in the development of deep geothermal plants, considering the potential for energy production from these plants. The environmental-science sector plays a crucial role in ensuring the sustainable development and implementation of geothermal energy policies in Lower Saxony.
