Mercedes-Benz is investing approximately 40 million South African Rands (R40M) to expand its electric vehicle (EV) charging network in South Africa. This expansion is part of a broader effort to build a reliable and accessible EV charging infrastructure across the country, aiming to alleviate challenges such as limited charging points, poor maintenance, and range anxiety among consumers.

The rollout timeline aligns with ongoing developments in South Africa’s EV sector through 2025 and beyond, as the local EV market grows and government policies support clean vehicle adoption and local manufacturing. Mercedes-Benz’s initiative is integrated within a wider strategy involving strategic partnerships that leverage existing fuel stations along major routes to provide public, free-access charging points.

The charging infrastructure expansion is the first step towards e-mobility transformation in South Africa. Chargify, a charging point operator, is the strategic partner for this project, prioritizing installing charging stations in metropolitan areas such as airports and shopping malls, followed by small towns across South Africa. The exact locations of the new charging stations have not been specified yet.

The expansion will be carried out in two phases. By the end of Q1 2024, R15 million (around €730,000) will be invested to install 67 charging stations. An additional R25 million (€1,216 million) will be invested in the second phase to install 60 charging stations nationwide.

Mercedes-Benz's charging network expansion is part of Enterprise and Supplier Development (ESD) to increase electrification in South Africa and create new jobs. The partnership model primarily involves integrating charging infrastructure at fuel retail sites to ensure convenient, reliable access without the need for new site construction.

The charging stations will be compatible with other electric vehicle (EV) brand models through the partnership with Chargify. This combined approach addresses infrastructure gaps highlighted by past EV convoys and consumer concerns, fostering wider NEV adoption in South Africa.

Mercedes-Benz is committed to its electrification strategy, aiming to become greener in major global markets and key developing regions. The brand has an electrification strategy outlined in 'Ambition 2039', which represents the year the brand aims to reach carbon neutrality.

The partnership also involves collaboration with local government, Development Bank of South Africa, and private innovators. 1. In the context of Mercedes-Benz's electrification strategy, the partnership with Chargify in environmental-science and technology aims to create a vast network of compatible charging stations for various electric vehicle brands, contributing to the growth of the industry and addressing infrastructure gaps in South Africa.
  2. Beyond the EV charging network expansion, Mercedes-Benz's enterprise and supplier development (ESD) in finance and industry is also geared towards increasing electrification in South Africa, fostering job creation and collaborating with local government, Development Bank of South Africa, and private innovators to further its ambitious goal of carbon neutrality by 2039.
