Expansion of the comprehensive insurance program for multiple hazards
The Promotion Program for Multi-Peril Crop Insurance in Baden-Württemberg is set to expand in 2026, providing comprehensive protection against weather-related risks for special crop operations. This announcement was made by Minister of Food, Rural Areas, and Consumer Protection, Peter Hauk, who stated that the expansion offers more security to farmers.
The program, which was connected with FIONA and the Joint Application in the application year 2025, has been developed in close coordination with agricultural professional associations and insurance providers. Fruit, wine, and hops growing, an important part of agriculture in Baden-Württemberg and contributing significantly to the economic and cultural diversity of the country, have a high value creation per hectare but are weather-dependent and prone to damage.
Weather-related damage such as hail, late frost, storm, or heavy rain can quickly destroy the entire year's yield and threaten the existence of these cultures. By including hail risk and hops cultivation in the multi-peril crop insurance, these operations will receive comprehensive protection against such risks.
The Baden-Württemberg Farmers' Association (Landwirtschaftlicher Hauptverband Baden-Württemberg) and Landwirtschaftliche Rentenbank have closely collaborated with insurance providers in expanding the multiple insurance program application for fruit growing, viticulture, and hop cultivation starting from the application year 2026.
The use of EU funds from the second pillar of the Common Agricultural Policy and integration into the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development are future possibilities for the program. This connection is a prerequisite for using these funds for financing the expanded program.
The program's administrative process has been made more efficient and modernized with the use of online procedures. The program, which was launched in 2020, has been stabilized and developed, with improvements in administrative implementation, financing, and content design. The promotion program for yield insurance for fruit and wine growing has been well received by growers.
These cultures are important for the food industry, gastronomy, tourism, and regional identity. The expansion of the program in 2026 will not only protect these valuable operations but also contribute to the continued growth and success of Baden-Württemberg's agricultural sector. The details of the expansion, including the promotion conditions, will be announced in the coming weeks.
