Deutsche Bank to Discontinue SMS-TAN Procedure: Prepare for Secure Authentication Change

Deutsche Bank has announced that it will discontinue the SMS-TAN (transaction authentication number via SMS) method by August 25, 2025. This transition aims to improve security but could result in millions of customers losing access to their accounts if they do not switch to alternative secure authentication methods before the deadline.

To ensure uninterrupted and secure online banking, customers are advised to switch to app-based TAN methods, hardware TAN generator devices, or other strong customer authentication (SCA) methods compliant with PSD2 regulations.

Here's what you need to do to prepare:

  1. Check Deutsche Bank communications: Look for emails, letters, or online notices detailing the replacement options for SMS-TAN. Banks usually provide guidance on how to activate new authentication options.
  2. Install and register the official Deutsche Bank banking app (if required). Many banks now rely on apps generating TANs via push notifications or using secured QR codes.
  3. Update your contact and device information in your online banking profile to ensure smooth transition.
  4. Test the new TAN method before August 25, 2025, to avoid service interruptions.
  5. If you are unsure or need help, contact Deutsche Bank customer service well in advance.

The mobileTAN procedure, which sends transaction codes via SMS, will also be discontinued. The photoTAN, a secure replacement for the SMS-TAN, will be used by Deutsche Bank customers from August 25, 2025. This can be activated through scanning a graphic or a push confirmation via app.

It's important to note that other banks have already stopped using the SMS-TAN method. Customers who have not activated a new security procedure by August 25, 2025 will be locked out of their online accounts.

To request an activation letter for the photoTAN, customers must do so latest by August 15, 2025. The separate credit card app "MeineKarte" is being shut down, and its functions will be integrated into the central banking app.

A new wave of phishing attacks is anticipated during the transition, with criminals potentially sending fake emails for TAN activation. Customers should not click on any links in emails during the transition period.

It's also worth mentioning that the mobileTAN procedure has been vulnerable to attacks in the past. Therefore, act proactively by switching to app-based TAN methods endorsed by Deutsche Bank before the August 25, 2025 deadline to ensure uninterrupted and secure online banking. If you need the official Deutsche Bank instructions, check their website or login to your online banking portal for detailed guidance.

Lastly, digital receipts stored in the "MeineKarte" app should be secured by August 22, 2025. From August 25, 2025, BestSign will be offered as another security procedure.

Stay informed and take action to secure your online banking with Deutsche Bank.

  1. Recognizing the impending change in security procedures, consumers should stay updated on alternative authentication methods provided by Deutsche Bank, such as app-based TAN methods, hardware TAN generator devices, or strong customer authentication (SCA) methods, to maintain uninterrupted banking services.
  2. Adhering to banking industry regulations, financing institutions like Deutsche Bank are obliged to comply with PSD2 (Payment Services Directive 2) regulations, pushing for more secure personal-finance transactions and the phasing out of vulnerable methods like SMS-TAN by August 25, 2025.
