Five development plans for expediting the Swedish railway network presented by our company in the recently released report
In a significant move towards a greener and more efficient transport system, Alstom, the world leader in smart and sustainable mobility, has published a new report titled "Bringing the railway up to speed with Sweden - five proposals for a better railway system."
The report, launched on September 17, 2025, aims to streamline and accelerate the development of new and existing railway infrastructure in Sweden. It focuses on five critical areas: punctuality, capacity, modernization of infrastructure, skills development, and innovation.
Maria Signal Martebo, CEO of Alstom Sverige, hopes the report will inspire decision-makers, industry players, and the public to prioritize railway infrastructure for a climate-friendly, reliable, and future-proof transport system.
The Swedish railway industry is expected to play a crucial role in the development of new and upgraded infrastructure. In this regard, Alstom, as the largest supplier in the Swedish train market, has delivered over a thousand trains to Swedish railways and holds several large maintenance contracts. The company is also leading the implementation of the European Railway Traffic Management System (ERTMS) in Sweden, both on board the vehicles and along the tracks.
Rail travel in Sweden is a key driver of economic growth, regional development, and social cohesion, with over a billion train journeys taking place each year, twice as many as in the 1990s. The Swedish Transport Administration estimates that rail travel will increase by 47 percent by 2045.
To meet the growing demand and ensure a sustainable transport system, the report advocates for a greater focus on research and innovation. It proposes increased collaboration between the industry and authorities to optimize construction processes in the upcoming national plan. The report also recommends modernizing procurement and financing models to streamline railway construction and maintenance, and improve opportunities for public-private partnerships.
The report further emphasizes the need for educational initiatives at all levels to meet current and future skills requirements in the railway sector. It presents concrete solutions to create a more punctual, high-capacity, and innovative transport system in Sweden. The report also identifies five proposals to maximize the impact of upcoming infrastructure investments in the areas of punctuality, capacity, outdated infrastructure, skills development, and innovation.
The report also suggests faster implementation of the digital signaling system ERTMS for enhanced punctuality, capacity, and safety. The report ends with a call for action, urging all stakeholders to work together to bring Sweden's railway up to speed for a sustainable, reliable, and future-proof transport system.
