So, What's Up with the Berlin S-Bahn?
Following the storm, here's the operational status of the subway system in Berlin:
Our Dish on the Latest Chaos
It's been a wild week for the S-Bahn in Berlin, and y'all need to know what's going on before you hop on that train!
The storm that rolled in on Thursday evening? Caused quite a mess! S- and regional trains around the city have been battling some issues, and it ain't over yet!
Northbound Lines Still a Hot Mess
Up north, things are still a mess. Storm damage's causing issues on the S1 and S25 lines, and it looks like it's gonna carry on till tomorrow. The S1's out between Schönholz and Birkenwerder, and replacement buses are running between Schönholz and Hohen Neuendorf. As for the S25, it's only making it to Tegel, and buses are handling the rest of the way to Hennigsdorf.
All this is causing a headache for festival-goers heading to the Fusion festival in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. These folks should expect some extra travel time due to the disruptions.
Quick, Intense Storm to Blame
Thursday's storm was short but fierce. It managed to bring down around 30 trees onto the tracks, and trains smacked into fallen trees or poles eight times. Miraculously, no one was injured.
The issue is that S-Bahn trains run on live tracks. So, they can't exactly be stopped and evacuated in the middle of the line for safety reasons. That's why the entire service needed a temporary shutdown - a preventative measure, but necessary one.
What's Happening Now
As we speak, services are trying to pick up the pace again. However, northern routes are still experiencing hitches, with the S1 and S25 lines being the main offenders. Keep an eye on updates as we move closer to June 29, 2025, since that's the scheduled end date for the ongoing interruptions. Fingers crossed, the service should be back to normal soon!
