Ford Unaware of Controversy Regarding Ontario Place's Park Construction Project
In the heart of Toronto, construction for a new $800 million theme park has begun at Ontario Place, a popular recreational spot. The project is being led by the Swiss mega-spa builder, Therme Group, under a 95-year lease signed by the Ontario government.
However, the circumstances surrounding the lease and the project have sparked controversy. The lease was signed without any public consultation or environmental assessments, a move that has been criticised by many.
Currently, the lease rights for the 145-acre leisure and wellness project are held by Tridel, a development company closely involved in the project. Despite claims of ignorance, Premier Doug Ford maintains that he was unaware of any financial concerns regarding the theme park.
Interestingly, Ford's staff are reported to pay close attention to issues that could become problems. Construction for the theme park has already started, with trees being removed on the west side of the site.
The theme park project is being labelled as a controversial move by the Ford government, particularly as it comes at a time when over 700,000 people are looking for jobs and the government consistently fails to meet housing targets. Critics argue that resources could be better utilised to address these pressing issues.
As the project progresses, it remains to be seen how the Ontario government will address these concerns and whether the theme park will become a much-needed boost for the region or another point of contention.
