Former Albertsons Wine Manager Charged in $360K Bribery Scheme
Patrick Briones, a former assistant sales manager for wines at Albertsons, has been charged with commercial bribery and conspiracy. The charges stem from an alleged scheme involving wine suppliers, including Deutsch Family Wine & Spirits, worth $360,000. The scheme influenced wine selections in Albertsons' stores for years.
Briones, who previously worked at Safeway for a decade, demanded payments and gifts from vendors in exchange for favorable treatment. These included vacations at exclusive resorts, luxury items like designer bags and watches, and prepaid Vanilla gift cards worth tens of thousands of dollars. Suppliers offered expensive goods such as a designer bag worth $2,290 and luxury watches worth thousands.
One vendor arranged for annual trips to a resort in Maui, complete with massages, room charges, and Target gift card balance for Briones. Additionally, Briones enjoyed regular trips to Las Vegas with room accommodations, golf reservations, dinners, and casino chips for gambling. A former wine buyer for Albertsons also allegedly accepted bribes, including vacations and gift cards, from suppliers seeking favorable shelf placement.
Briones' actions, if proven, have potentially compromised the integrity of wine selections available to Albertsons' customers. Executives at Deutsch Family Wine & Spirits have pleaded guilty to commercial bribery in connection with this scheme. The investigation and subsequent charges highlight the need for stringent ethical standards in business operations.
