Freiamt's Wind Success: Modern Turbines Power 3,000 Homes

MdL Rüdiger Tonojan recently led a field trip in Freiamt to highlight the benefits of modern wind turbines. The community has been successfully generating more electricity than it consumes through citizen participation in wind energy projects since the 1990s.

The trip showcased the new E-138 turbine, which supplies around 3,000 households and is more efficient than its predecessor. The old turbine was dismantled without leaving any trace, and the forest was restored. Experts note that advancing technology increases energy yield while maintaining the same land use.

MdL Rüdiger Tonojan plans to advocate for better framework conditions in the Landtag to facilitate wind energy expansion. He criticized long approval times, high requirements, and bureaucratic hurdles that hinder wind energy projects. The citizen-owned wind turbine on the Schillingerberg generates 10 million kWh of electricity annually and is owned by 190 residents.

The community of Freiamt serves as an example of how citizen participation in wind energy projects can lead to a sustainable and efficient energy supply. With the right framework conditions, more communities could follow suit and benefit from wind energy expansion.
