Fuel costs decrease, as per ADAC's report
The current gasoline price in Germany stands at around €1.64 per liter (US$1.91 per liter) as of mid-August 2025, slightly below the average price of €1.67 per liter reported one month and three months ago, and lower than one year ago at €1.69 per liter [1]. Prices have decreased slightly recently but remain elevated compared to the long-term average of €1.52 per liter observed since 2015 [1].
In the past month, the decrease in E10 prices was insufficient, according to the ADAC (German Automobile Club) [2]. The difference between the average prices of E10 and diesel was 9.8 cents per liter in the previous week, but on Tuesday, it increased to 10.9 cents per liter [3]. Despite the latest decrease, the prices are still considered too high by the ADAC [2].
The diesel price has shown a continuous downward trend for nine weeks [4]. However, the ADAC believes that the latest decrease in prices brings E10 and diesel closer to an appropriate level [2]. The spokesperson for the ADAC is closely monitoring the current price changes to ensure fair treatment for consumers [6].
The ADAC considers further adjustments necessary to ensure the price level reflects changes in the commodity markets [7]. They argue that the price adjustments for E10 and diesel do not adequately reflect the global developments in oil prices [7]. The price adjustments are also influenced by factors such as regulatory fees, taxes, and market conditions, which keep prices elevated compared to pre-crisis levels [5].
The ADAC spokesperson informed the dts news agency on Wednesday about current fuel prices [4]. The price of E10 decreased by 0.8 cents compared to the previous week, while the price of diesel decreased by 1.9 cents [4]. Despite the recent decreases, the ADAC still views prices as high due to these factors [1][3][5].
Long-term trends show that gasoline prices in Germany have experienced significant volatility. They reached a historical peak of about €2.20 per liter in March 2022, linked to geopolitical and energy market disruptions, and a low of €1.15 per liter during the pandemic in April 2020 [1]. According to econometric forecasts, prices are expected to trend upwards again, potentially reaching around US$2.13-2.18 per liter in 2026-2027 [3], indicating a long-term upward trend despite short-term decreases.

The ADAC is advocating for further adjustments to the E10 and diesel prices, arguing that these changes do not reflect the global developments in oil prices and commodity markets. The continued monitoring of the ADAC spokesperson reveals that despite the recent downward trend in diesel price, the price of E10 still remains high compared to the long-term average, influenced by factors such as regulatory fees, taxes, and market conditions, which keep energy prices elevated compared to pre-crisis levels.
