News Article: Central Government Commits Support to Rajasthan's Agriculture and Rural Development

Union Agriculture and Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan met Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma on July 28, 2025, at Krishi Bhawan in New Delhi. The meeting focused on enhancing central support to Rajasthan's schemes, especially in employment generation, housing, and irrigation development.

Chouhan praised Rajasthan's efforts under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Gramin) and assured timely approval for additional housing once the ongoing surveys are verified. The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Gramin) progress has been commendable, with plans to construct about 7.46 lakh rural houses under PMAY and PM-JANMAN schemes.

Regarding employment, the Ministry of Rural Development has released Rs 4,384 crore to Rajasthan under MGNREGA for FY 2025-26, allocated largely for wages (Rs 3,286 crore), materials (Rs 944 crore), and administrative expenses (Rs 154 crore). Chief Minister Sharma expressed gratitude and assured efficient utilization of the funds to create rural employment opportunities.

In irrigation and agriculture, discussions highlighted the implementation progress of the ‘Per Drop More Crop’ initiative under the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY), including construction of rainwater harvesting structures such as pond-like tanks and fencing around fields to protect crops. Chief Minister Sharma proposed deploying agricultural supervisors at the Gram Panchayat level.

The leaders explored opportunities to boost interstate trade, seeking national-level recognition for Rajasthan's premium peanut varieties and castor oil, particularly noted in the Bassi region of Jaipur. They also mentioned the decline in Kharif sowing of oilseeds and cotton compared to last year, but noted an increase in Kharif sowing by 31.73 lakh hectares compared to last year, with rice and pulses leading the growth.

Chouhan expressed optimism about an improved agricultural yield in 2025. However, he also requested central assistance for the deployment of agricultural supervisors at the Gram Panchayat level. The Union Minister and the Chief Minister agreed on a holistic approach integrating employment generation through MGNREGA, substantial rural housing development, enhanced irrigation infrastructure under PMKSY, and grassroots agricultural extension strengthening.

Overall, the central government has committed full support to Rajasthan’s agriculture and rural development priorities, including expedited scheme approvals and financial backing. The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to work towards a prosperous and self-reliant Rajasthan.
