German Customs Raids Expose Illegal Employment in Borken Restaurants
German Customs (Zoll) discovered multiple violations of the law combating illegal employment in restaurants in the district of Borken on Sunday, August 31, 2025. Nine customs officers, along with three employees from the Foreigners' Office and two police officers, inspected five catering establishments and one taxi company, leading to several investigations.
In one establishment, an employee refused to be interviewed, prompting an administrative offense procedure. Meanwhile, in another, two employees were found working without proper ID, and in yet another, several employees were discovered working without residence permits, not registered for social security, and not receiving the minimum wage. A 68-year-old employee in the first establishment was also found without a valid residence permit, leading to investigations against her and her employer. In a third establishment, employees were working without social security registration, further investigations were launched.
Goswin Brehe, head of the Financial Control Schwarzarbeit department, emphasized the significance of these inspections, stating that the number of violations found in one evening underscores their importance.
The inspections by the German Customs uncovered several violations of the law combating illegal employment in catering establishments in the district of Borken. Investigations have been initiated against the establishments and employees involved, highlighting the need for such inspections to maintain fair labor practices.
