German-Japanese collaboration is sought by Wadephul

In the rapidly changing geopolitical landscape of the Indo-Pacific, Germany, Japan, and Indonesia have found common ground in their shared values and mutual interests. These nations, bound by their commitment to international law, a rules-based order, and economic security, are confronting challenges posed by China's increasingly assertive behavior.

Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul of Germany is currently on a visit to Japan and Indonesia, highlighting the importance of these relationships. Wadephul emphasised that all three countries are united in their efforts to counter challenges to global cooperation and freedom in the Indo-Pacific.

Germany, like Japan, views China’s assertiveness as a risk to the security of vital international trade routes and economic prosperity, not just for the Indo-Pacific but for Europe as well. This shared concern underscores the interconnected nature of their interests.

To address these challenges, the countries are planning to strengthen security cooperation through multilateral partnerships. This includes providing support to regional partners, such as Germany’s drone program to boost maritime security for the Philippines and Malaysia, and fostering energy transition partnerships with Indonesia.

Germany and Japan coordinate politically through mechanisms like joint intergovernmental consultations and the G7, focusing on security dialogues addressing threats from Russia and North Korea. This strategic alignment among the partners is evident in their close coordination.

The nations advocate for collective action to ensure stability, open markets, and free shipping routes. They also seek to expand the United Nations' role, including Security Council reform, to better address international challenges.

The fate of secure sea lanes and global supply chains is largely decided in the Indo-Pacific. Fundamental rules of global coexistence are at stake due to China's behavior. The countries are determined to maintain a stable and prosperous Indo-Pacific region by reinforcing international law, bolstering security partnerships, promoting energy cooperation, and engaging in multilateral diplomatic coordination.
