Germany Aims to Lead in Fusion Energy with First Power Plant

Germany is set to become a global leader in fusion energy, with an industrially-led consortium of German companies planning to build the world's first fusion power plant. This ambitious project, backed by a government action plan, aims to strengthen technical sovereignty and establish Germany as a leading global hub for fusion energy.

The action plan, 'Germany on the Way to a Fusion Power Plant', has been adopted with a budget of over 2 billion euros in the current legislative period. It includes eight central measures to promote the development of a fusion ecosystem and establish Germany as an energy producer and exporter in the fusion sector. The plan sees fusion as an important, long-term building block for clean, secure, and baseload-capable electricity production.

A significant breakthrough in fusion research was achieved in December 2022 at the National Ignition Facility (NIF) in the USA, known as the so-called ignition. This has bolstered confidence in the feasibility of fusion power. Germany is committed to the international nuclear fusion project ITER, with the EU funding it with 5.61 billion euros for the years 2021 to 2027.

The planned first demonstration fusion power plant in Germany is intended to be built primarily by German companies, supported by the government action plan. This plan focuses on using domestic technology and industry, with investments of about 2.5 billion euros in the current legislative period. Research and Technology Minister Dorothee Bär has expressed confidence in this initiative.

With a significant increase in investment, Germany is poised to lead the way in fusion energy. The planned first demonstration fusion power plant, backed by a comprehensive action plan, demonstrates the country's commitment to clean, secure, and sustainable energy production. This ambitious project not only strengthens Germany's technical sovereignty but also positions it as a global leader in the fusion sector.
