Germany's Appeal to Founders Grows, But Capital Access and Bureaucracy Remain Challenges

Germany's appeal to founders is growing, with nearly 40% now preferring it over the USA, a 6% increase since 2024. However, founders still see advantages in other countries for bureaucracy and capital access. The 'Startup Monitor' 2022, based on 1,846 online surveys, reveals these trends.

Investments in German defense tech startups have surged, from €1.3 million in 2020 to €878.5 million in the first eight months of 2022. Despite this growth, only 57% of domestic founders view Germany's location positively, a 4% decrease from last year. Germany ranks 18th among the 40 largest economies for access to risk capital.

Verena Pausder, chairwoman of the Startup Association, attributes Germany's increased attractiveness to the 'course of the American government'. She emphasizes the need to 'mobilize more capital' for startups in Germany. Founders praise Germany's proximity to universities but see other countries as having advantages in bureaucracy and access to capital. 78% of founders would start again in Germany, down from 84% last year and 89% in 2023.

Germany's appeal to founders is rising, but challenges remain in accessing capital and bureaucracy. Investment in defense tech startups is booming, yet only half of domestic founders view Germany's location positively. The 'Startup Monitor' 2022 highlights these trends and the need for further capital mobilization.
