Germany's Energy-Intensive Industry Sees Circular Economy as Climate Solution
The circular economy, with its potential to promote sustainable and economically viable production processes, is seen as a solution to the challenges faced by the energy-intensive industry in Germany. A recent impulse paper, focusing on the steel, plastics, and cement industries, discusses the role of the circular economy in climate protection and resilience, while a roadmap paper outlines a clear path towards achieving this transition.
The industry is currently grappling with high and volatile energy prices, geopolitical developments, competitive pressure, and regulatory burdens. These factors pose risks of job cuts and relocation of production sites. However, the circular economy offers significant opportunities and savings through circular processes.
To navigate these challenges, the impulse paper proposes five areas for action: aligning the market framework, ensuring financing, strengthening demand, aligning the legal and regulatory framework, and providing information and facilitating exchange. These steps aim to support the industry's transition towards a circular economy.
The roadmap paper, part of the National Circular Economy Strategy (NKWS), aims to define a clear roadmap with intermediate targets and measurable progress. This fundamental renewal of structures, products, and production processes is necessary for the industry to achieve climate neutrality. The industry is responsible for nearly a quarter of all greenhouse gas emissions in Germany.
The circular economy, with its potential to alleviate challenges and promote sustainable production, is a viable strategy for the energy-intensive industry in Germany. The proposed roadmap and areas for action provide a clear path towards achieving this transition, supporting the industry's efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve resilience.
