Germany's Wind Power Expansion Faces Political Headwinds

Germany, the European leader in wind power, faces headwinds in its expansion. Despite retaining the top spot with nearly 60 GW of installed capacity, the future of new wind energy news in Europe is uncertain due to political turmoil. Meanwhile, over 750 MW of German wind farm projects languish in legal limbo.

The slowdown in Germany's wind power growth is alarming. In 2018, new onshore wind installations plummeted by over half, adding just 1.7 GW. This is a stark contrast to the record permit numbers and ambitious federal targets. The culprit? Political challenges such as permitting issues and ineffective auctions.

Germany's permitting process for onshore wind projects has become a bottleneck, now taking over two years. This, coupled with unclear local regulations and long approval processes, has hindered growth. The recent under-subscribed wind auctions further underscore the struggles. Across Europe, twelve countries didn't install a single wind turbine in 2018, contributing to the overall slump in new capacity to levels not seen since 2013.

Despite being the EU's second largest form of power generation, wind power's growth in Europe is stalling. Germany, the continent's leader, must address its permitting issues and auction processes to reignite its wind energy news expansion. The future of Europe's wind energy investments hangs in the balance.
