Giorgi Bachiashvili's Parents Face 12 Years for Money Laundering Assistance
Giorgi Bachiashvili's parents are facing up to 12 years in prison after being charged with assisting their son in a money laundering scheme. The 11-year prison sentence Bachiashvili received in March for his role in the scheme has been extended by an additional 4.5 years for illegally crossing the border.
Between 2017 and 2023, Bachiashvili, with the help of his parents, laundered illicit assets worth $3,944,957 and ₾1,097,187 ($400,000). The scheme involved transferring funds and assets from abroad into Georgia, mixing them with other assets, and purchasing property. The proceeds were then moved to Bachiashvili's accounts.
The Prosecutor General's Office has launched criminal proceedings against Bachiashvili's parents, alleging they assisted in the money laundering scheme. Bachiashvili's lawyer claims the investigation against his parents is based on property their son had purchased for them, which does not constitute a crime under current legislation.
Bachiashvili's parents are set to face trial, with a potential sentence of up to 12 years if convicted. Bachiashvili, currently serving an 11.5-year sentence, also faces another case for failing to properly perform his official duties as the former head of the Co-Investment Fund.
