Global Crackdown on Evil Corp: UK Sanctions 7 More in Operation Cronos

Operation Cronos, a global law enforcement initiative, has led to significant developments in the fight against cybercrime. The US Department of Justice (DoJ) indicted Maksim Yakubets and Igor Turashev, leaders of the notorious Evil Corp, in 2019. Now, the UK has sanctioned seven more individuals linked to this group, while Australia and the USA have also imposed sanctions.

Evil Corp, known for its ties to the LockBit ransomware group, has caused substantial damage worldwide. The organization has extorted at least $300 million from global victims across various sectors. It is responsible for the development and distribution of BitPaymer and Dridex, targeting banks and financial institutions in over 40 countries, resulting in over $100 million stolen.

The UK National Crime Agency (NCA) has sanctioned 16 members of Evil Corp, including Yakubets' right-hand man, Aleksandr Ryzhenkov, who is also a LockBit affiliate. The latest sanctions target individuals whose support for Evil Corp was not previously exposed. The USA had initially sanctioned seven individuals, including Yakubets and Turashev, in 2019, and the UK has now designated these same seven. While the search results do not provide specific information about the four LockBit group suspects arrested by Europol, their connection to Evil Corp is clear.

Operation Cronos has dealt a significant blow to Evil Corp and its affiliates. The coordinated sanctions from the UK, USA, and Australia, along with the 2019 indictments by the US DoJ, demonstrate a strong international response to cybercrime. These actions aim to disrupt Evil Corp's operations and hold its members accountable for their actions.
