Greece's New Traffic Law Brings Severe Fines, Strict Enforcement
Greece has introduced a stringent new balance traffic law, effective September 13, 2025, aiming to enhance road safety and discipline. The law brings severe fines and strict enforcement, significantly impacting both locals and tourists.
The new balance law introduces severe penalties for various traffic offenses. Exceeding the speed limit by more than 20 km/h in residential areas can now incur fines of at least 100 euros. Using a mobile phone while driving can result in hefty fines up to 2,000 euros and license suspension of up to one year. Illegal parking can lead to fines between 20 and 150 euros, with vehicles potentially being impounded. Wild camping and parking campers in restricted areas can attract fines up to 3,000 euros.
Drunk driving is heavily penalized, with fines up to 350 euros, license suspension, and potential jail time. Not wearing a helmet or seatbelt can lead to high fines up to 2,000 euros for repeated offenses. Serious traffic offenses can result in immediate license suspension, causing mobility and time issues for tourists. The 30 km/h speed limit in residential areas will come into effect in 2026.
