Green Hydrogen Microgrid Installations Planned at Simhadri, Marking a Pioneering Move in India

The National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) has embarked on an ambitious project to decarbonize far-off regions like Ladakh and Jammu & Kashmir, currently reliant on diesel generators. The Hydrogen Microgrid Project at Simhadri near Visakhapatnam is a strategic component in India's broader transition towards renewable energy and carbon neutrality through hydrogen-based solutions.

NTPC's hydrogen initiatives, including the recently commissioned Hydrogen Mobility Project at Leh, are part of its clean energy and decarbonization strategy. These projects align with India's larger green hydrogen mission, which is expected to grow significantly to USD 34 billion by 2030, with strong government support for green hydrogen production and use.

Green hydrogen microgrids, such as the one proposed by NTPC, integrate renewable power (solar, wind) with electrolyzers to produce hydrogen with zero emissions. The Hydrogen Microgrid Project at Simhadri will operate in standalone mode from 5PM to 7AM and involve the use of a 240 kW Solid Oxide Electrolyser for hydrogen production, powered by the nearby Floating Solar project. The hydrogen produced during sunshine hours will be stored at high pressure and electrified using a 50 kW Solid Oxide Fuel Cell.

The successful implementation of the project could pave the way for large-scale hydrogen energy storage projects in India. If successful, this project could be useful for studying and deploying multiple microgrids in various off-grid and strategic locations of the country. The project configuration has been designed in-house by NTPC, making it a unique initiative for India.

This project is significant in India's pursuit of clean and sustainable energy solutions. It aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of making Ladakh a carbon neutral territory and India carbon neutral by 2070. The project is a step towards achieving the national goal of net-zero emissions by 2070, as hydrogen serves as a clean energy carrier capable of reducing dependence on fossil fuels, lowering greenhouse gas emissions, and enabling grid stability through hybrid renewable energy systems.

The Hydrogen Microgrid Project at Simhadri is a testament to NTPC's commitment to boost decarbonization and support India's carbon-neutral vision by leveraging green hydrogen technologies integrated with renewable energy sources. The project's success could mark a significant milestone in India's transition towards a sustainable and carbon-neutral future.
