" affordability concerns lingering over 58 euro Germany ticket"

Greens Propose Fixed Ticket Prices for Germany

Green party bigwig Katharina Droge is pressing for a price drop on the Germany ticket to 49 euros and a formal assurance that this rate remains. The ruckus over financing the offer's continuation overshadows the current price tag of 58 euros.

Droge, the Green faction leader, dropped a bomb: "Affordable transportation was the Germany ticket's promise. At 58 euros, it's too steep. Trains and buses must be accessible to all." Federal and state governments must act, Droge says. "Our proposal is a price guarantee for a 49-euro ticket, to be jointly issued by both parties."

Back in January, the cost of the nationwide valid ticket for local and regional transport rose by around 18 percent, to 58 euros per month from the original 49 euros. The Greens backed the 49-euro cost in their election manifesto.

Funding in jeopardy from 2026

States and the federal government are butting heads over the Germany ticket's funding post-2025. State officials are pressuring federal government to shoulder a larger portion of the costs after 2026. The states' positions aren't uniform, leaving the fate of the Germany ticket uncertain. Transport ministers from both levels will hash out the issue at a meeting on June 27 in Berlin.

Currently, each entity chips in 1.5 billion euros annually to offset transport company revenue losses. Common commuting tickets used to cost significantly more before the aid stepped in. However, the funding only lasts until 2025, and some in the transport industry worry it won't be enough to cover losses in the long haul.
