State officials are pressuring federal government to shoulder a larger portion of the costs after 2026. The states' positions aren't uniform, leaving the fate of the Germany ticket uncertain. Transport ministers from both levels will hash out the issue at a meeting on June 27 in Berlin.
Currently, each entity chips in 1.5 billion euros annually to offset transport company revenue losses. Common commuting tickets used to cost significantly more before the aid stepped in. However, the funding only lasts until 2025, and some in the transport industry worry it won't be enough to cover losses in the long haul.
