Gurgaon's High Cost of Living Stuns Chartered Accountant, Bengaluru Offers Savings
Meenal Goyal, a Chartered Accountant based in Gurgaon, discovered that the cost of living in the city was significantly higher than she anticipated. The rent for a decent 1BHK apartment near her office was ₹25,000 per month, excluding maintenance and utilities.
Goyal, who previously lived and worked in New Delhi until 2004 and then moved to New York City, found that the high cost of living in Gurgaon was impacting her ability to save and invest. Her monthly expenses, including regular eating out, cabs, groceries, and weekend plans, often exceeded ₹45,000.
She decided to compare the cost of living in Gurgaon with Bengaluru. In Bengaluru, she found that the rent for a similar 1BHK apartment was around ₹18,000, with groceries, food, and commuting feeling less expensive. This difference in monthly expenses was approximately ₹10,000. Over a year, this could amount to a significant saving of more than ₹1 lakh.
Goyal's experience highlights the impact of cost of living on one's financial planning and career decisions. The difference in expenses between Gurgaon and Bengaluru could potentially allow her to save more, invest differently, or even take career risks she might not have considered otherwise.
