Hawaii Council Considers Bill to Boost Kahakai Boulevard Pedestrian Safety

The Hawaii County Council is considering a bill that aims to improve pedestrian infrastructure along Kahakai Boulevard, a heavily traveled corridor used by many students. The bill, introduced by Councilman Matt Kaneali'i-Kleinfelder, seeks to amend the current capital improvements budget to include these safe projects.

The Safe Routes to School program, which aims to improve school infrastructure like roads and crosswalks, is behind these safe projects. The county has previously implemented similar safe projects near Waiakea school complex in Hilo and Keonepoko Elementary School in Pahoa. If approved, the bill would amend Ordinance 25-46 and is scheduled for discussion at 10 a.m. on Wednesday. The funding for these safe projects includes $530,000 from the county and $2.1 million from federal grants. The Committee on Finance is also considering legislation to add $2.6 million for pedestrian safety projects near Keonepoko Elementary School in Pahoa.

The Kahakai Boulevard projects, if approved, will significantly enhance pedestrian safety and accessibility for students and residents alike. The funding from both the county and federal grants demonstrates a commitment to improving infrastructure and ensuring the safety of Hawaii's students.
