Honda escalates production of hybrid automobiles in the United States
Honda Ratchets Up Hybrid Car Production in the US Amid Soaring Demand
Throw that old gas guzzler out the window! Honda's giving hybrid vehicles a serious boost in the United States. The Japanese automaker is upping production of its hybrid cars and beefing up the procurement of U.S.-made parts, including batteries for their hybrid beasts, because let's face it – folks just can't get enough of them! 🚗💨
Daisuke Shimizu, plant manager at Honda's Greensburg, Indiana, assembly plant, shared the news. This plant churns out both hybrid and gasoline versions of the popular CR-V SUV and flagship Civic, with an annual production capacity of 250,000 units. Shimizu remarked, "We'll focus on expanding production of hybrid vehicles, for which demand is expected to increase further in North America." 🚀
By year-end, the Indiana plant plans to start using U.S.-made batteries. It's interesting to note that Honda has a higher percentage of locally manufactured vehicles in the United States than other Japanese automakers, with approximately 60% of its vehicles coming from homegrown production.
Honda also plans to manufacture some Civic models currently imported from Japan at the Indiana plant starting in September. This move is a response to US President Donald Trump's tariff policy, which the company aims to navigate cleverly. 🚫⚠️
Now, don't get too excited about electric vehicles just yet. Honda will indeed stick to its plan to start production at its Ohio plant at the end of the year, but it's pushing back the start of operations at its new Canadian plant for about two years. Honda sees hybrid vehicles as a crucial revenue stream to fund its transition to electric vehicles, but for now, they're sticking with hybrid as their main focus. 🔄⚡️

The increased demand for hybrid vehicles in North America has prompted Honda to enhance production at its Greensburg, Indiana plant. This expansion includes the use of U.S.-made batteries and the manufacture of certain Civic models currently imported from Japan. Honda aims to achieve a higher ratio of locally produced vehicles to uphold its reputation as a leading Japanese automaker in this aspect. Meanwhile, the company remains focused on hybrid vehicles due to their role as a significant revenue stream, while also planning to transition to electric vehicles in the future. This strategic approach allows Honda to capitalize on the first-mover advantage in the hybrid market while navigating tariff policies carefully.
