Article:

In a noteworthy revelation, telecommunications expert Joerg Schamberg from Verivox asserts that some fiber optic tariffs for households in Germany are cheaper than DSL counterparts, potentially signaling a shift in consumer preference.

According to Verivox's analysis, the "Fiber Optic 150" tariff from Deutsche Telekom is priced at €22.45 monthly, slightly costlier than the "Magenta Zuhause L," which stands at €22.20. However, from the 25th month, the fiber optic tariff with Deutsche Telekom becomes €2.50 cheaper than the DSL tariff.

Schamberg elaborates that various fiber optic providers offer tariffs with over 100 megabits per second for under €30 monthly. Conversely, some DSL tariffs offer less performance at higher costs. Vodafone charges the same for all technologies after the minimum contract period.

Verivox emphasizes that the outdated DSL technology struggles to meet future requirements for stability and speed. Although fiber optic is available in 36 percent of German households, it is only activated in one out of four of these households, according to the Federal Association for Broadband Communication. This means that nearly three-quarters of bookable connections remain inactive.

Boosting the slow demand could be addressed through consumer-based models, regional special tariffs, or loyalty discounts.

The comparison was conducted by Verivox on April 17. The mentioned prices include all one-time costs and bonuses, calculated over 24 months.

Background:

DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) and Fiber Optic are two primary internet connection technologies. DSL speeds range from a few Mbps to up to 250 Mbps, depending on the DSL type and proximity to the exchange. Generally, DSL tariffs are more affordable but can be less reliable and slower compared to fiber. Fiber optic connections offer significantly higher speeds and reliability but are typically more expensive and not as universally available.

  1. To further enhance the competitiveness of fiber optic technology within the community, Verivox could consider incorporating vocational training programs focused on data-and-cloud-computing and technology in their industry, thus empowering a skilled workforce that can effectively manage and leverage the advantages of fiber optic connections.
  2. In light of the data revealing fiber optic tariffs being more cost-effective than DSL counterparts over a long-term basis, it would be beneficial for finance-oriented institutions to consider investing in vocational training programs specializing in vocational training, focusing on fiber optic technology, to cater to the growing demand for skilled professionals in the industry.
