Car Rental Giant Hertz Hit by Data Breach: 340k+ Customer Records at Risk!
Hundred thousand American customers' personal data, including names, contact details, credit card information, and Social Security numbers, reportedly leaked in an automotive company's data breach.
In a shocking revelation, worldwide car rental company, Hertz, disclosed a major data breach recently. Implicating its vendor, Cleo Communications US, the breach occurred via zero-day vulnerability exploits between October and December 2024.
Cybercriminals managed to filch sensitive customer data, including personal identifiable information, credit card details, and driver's license numbers. Reports suggest that some people's Social Security numbers, passport records, Medicare or Medicaid IDs, and details related to vehicular accident claims were also at risk.
Hertz publicly admitted the incident on their website, stating, "We confirm that Hertz data was acquired by an unauthorized third party that we understand exploited zero-day vulnerabilities within Cleo's platform in October 2024 and December 2024."
Hertz utilizes Cleo only for limited purposes, as a file transfer platform. The vendor took immediate action to close security loopholes after the breach. Hertz has not disclosed the exact number of affected customers as yet.
As a precautionary measure, Hertz sent letters to its customers, alerting them of the breach while offering free identity monitoring services to victims. While no cases of misuse for fraudulent purposes have been reported so far, the company urges customers to stay vigilant.
"We encourage potentially impacted individuals, as a best practice, to remain vigilant to the possibility of fraud or errors by reviewing account statements and monitoring free credit reports for any unauthorized activity and reporting any such activity."
