Hyundai and General Motors collude to create five fresh automobile models
General Motors and Hyundai Partner to Launch Co-Developed Vehicles
General Motors (GM) and Hyundai Motor have announced a strategic partnership to co-develop five vehicles, marking a significant step in sharing platforms while maintaining distinct brand identities. The collaboration, which began with a signed agreement in September 2024, aims to bring more choice to customers, faster, and at lower cost.
The partnership will result in the launch of five vehicles. Four of these will be designed for Central and South American markets, including a compact SUV, a car, a pick-up, and a mid-size pick-up, all versatile for internal combustion or hybrid systems. The fifth vehicle will be an electric commercial van for North America.
Design and engineering work on the Central and South American vehicles is currently underway, with these models expected to launch in 2028. The electric commercial van for North America will be manufactured in the U.S. starting as early as 2028.
GM will lead the development of the mid-size truck platform, while Hyundai will oversee the compact car and electric van projects. The companies expect combined annual sales of these co-developed vehicles to exceed 800,000 units once production is fully scaled.
This collaboration represents an interesting move for Hyundai, which is trying to break through in North America with alternative-powertrain vehicles, and for GM, whose BrightDrop van has been beleaguered by high supply and low demand.
Hyundai's CEO, José Muñoz, stated that the collaboration will help deliver value and choice to customers across multiple vehicle segments and markets. Meanwhile, Shilpan Amin, GM's senior vice president, expressed optimism about the partnership, stating that it will bring more choice to customers faster, and at lower cost.
Among the Detroit Three, Ford has the most market share in the U.S. commercial sector, and both it and GM currently retail electric commercial vans. The electric commercial van will be a rare foray for Hyundai into the North American commercial-vehicles market.
The partnership between GM and Hyundai also includes new-energy projects, joint production, powertrain and platform production, and investments in emerging battery- and hydrogen-power mobility and distribution, as well as investments in raw materials.
