IEA & EAI Merge in 1973, Birth AIEI & India's First Engineering Trade Fair

The Indian Engineering Association (IEA) and the Engineering Association of India (EAI) played significant roles in shaping India's engineering industry. Their merger in 1973 led to the formation of the Association of Indian Engineering Industry (AIEI).

The IEA, affiliated with the Bengal Chamber of Commerce and ASSOCHAM, was managed by British agencies and dominated by foreign shareholders. It operated through divisions to manage sectors. Tensions between Kolkata and Mumbai members in the 1960s led to a restructuring in 1971. Meanwhile, the EAI, associated with the Indian Chamber of Commerce and FICCI, followed traditional accounting and management practices. It operated through affiliated associations and addressed industry challenges alongside IEA.

The 1960s saw a shift with a new generation of Indian and professionally qualified engineers taking over, blurring distinctions between the two associations. In 1973, IEA and EAI merged to form AIEI, creating a new template for industry associations. The first international engineering exhibition, Indian Engineering Trade Fair (IETF), was inaugurated by President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed in 1975, marking AIEI's international presence.

The merger of IEA and EAI in 1973 led to the formation of AIEI, which continues to represent and promote the engineering industry in India. The IETF, inaugurated in 1975, showcased India's engineering prowess on the global stage.
