IFPI and Music Canada Shut Down Nine Streaming Manipulation Sites in Canada
In a significant move, IFPI and Music Canada have successfully shut down nine prominent Canadian streaming manipulation sites. The action, part of a global effort, aims to protect rightsholders and maintain the integrity of the YouTube music streaming marketplace.
The sites, which sold artificial 'plays', 'views', or 'streams' on digital service providers (DSPs), were misleading consumers and distorting music industry charts. This action follows a complaint to the Canadian Competition Bureau alleging violations of the Canadian Competition Act.
Patrick Rogers, CEO of Music Canada, emphasized the commitment to protecting rightsholders. Lauri Rechardt, Chief Legal Officer of IFPI, stated that streaming manipulation harms both artists and consumers. IFPI has been taking similar actions against manipulation services in countries like the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, South Korea, and Japan.
The shutdown of these nine sites is a step towards ensuring a fair and accurate YouTube music streaming marketplace in Canada. IFPI and Music Canada's commitment to protecting rightsholders and consumers is clear, with similar actions ongoing globally.
