IG Metall Fights for Future of Mercedes Sprinter Plant and ArcelorMittal Steelworks
Trade union IG Metall has initiated discussions with Mercedes-Benz to secure the future of the Ludwigsfelde plant, which produces the popular Sprinter van. Meanwhile, IG Metall is advocating for the preservation of ArcelorMittal's steelworks in Eisenhüttenstadt, with around 2,700 jobs at stake.
Jan Otto, regional leader of IG Metall, has expressed optimism about the future of the Mercedes plant in Ludwigsfelde. Despite Mercedes-Benz having no plans to close the plant, IG Metall is actively negotiating to ensure a long-term perspective for both the steelworks in Eisenhüttenstadt and the Mercedes plant in Ludwigsfelde. The union considers the number of employees at the Eisenhüttenstadt plant an advantage, pushing for job preservation and investment in future technologies. However, uncertainties about cost optimization at the steelworks remain, with the final outcome yet to be determined.
IG Metall continues its efforts to safeguard jobs and invest in future technologies at the Eisenhüttenstadt steelworks and the Mercedes plant in Ludwigsfelde. While Mercedes-Benz currently has no plans to close the Ludwigsfelde plant, negotiations are ongoing to ensure a secure future for both sites and their employees.
