Former President of German Boxing Association, Jens Hadler, Steps Down Amid Volkswagen Emissions Scandal
Jens Hadler, the departing president of the German Boxing Association (DBV), has been at the forefront of the organization's development, according to an official statement. However, his tenure has come to an abrupt end.
Hadler stepped down from his role as DBV president effective immediately, following an emergency meeting of the executive board. The resignation came after Hadler was sentenced to four and a half years in prison without probation by a German court for his role as head of diesel engine development at Volkswagen, according to NDR.
The Braunschweig Regional Court found Hadler "at the center of the storm" in the diesel scandal that erupted nearly a decade ago. This conviction comes after almost four years of trial with 175 days of hearings.
Four former Volkswagen managers, including Hadler, were found guilty of fraud this week. Another former manager, Hanno Jermer, was sentenced to two years and seven months in prison. The other two defendants received suspended sentences. All four had denied the charges and have announced plans to appeal the verdict to the Federal Court of Justice.
The diesel scandal, which became public in September 2015, involved installing illegal software in certain diesel engines of the Volkswagen, Seat, Audi, and Skoda brands. The software reduced nitrogen oxide emissions during testing but not on the road. As a result, worldwide, eleven million cars were affected. The VW Group has paid more than 32 billion euros in fines, compensation, and legal costs so far.
The Braunschweig verdict pertains to 2.3 million vehicles from Volkswagen, with a total damage of 2.1 billion euros, according to the court spokesman. The three former managers with the highest sentences are responsible for a significant portion of these manipulated cars and the total damage.
Mir Farid Vatanparast has been unanimously elected as Hadler's successor and will lead the association's business as a co-opted president until the election congress. Hadler praised the DBV, calling him a "significant personality who has given numerous pioneering impulses for the further development of the association."
