In an intriguing turn of events, hockey prodigy Matthew Schaefer grabs the spotlight in the mid-term rankings for the 2025 NHL Draft. This prestigious list sees Schaefer edging out his competition in a closely contested race.
In the upcoming 2025 NHL draft, the landscape is shifting from the typical dominance of top picks. While U.S. center James Hagens was initially seen as the frontrunner, Canadian defenseman Matthew Schaefer has grabbed the spotlight after NHL Central Scouting placed him as the No. 1 pick among North American skaters in their mid-term rankings.
Schaefer's rise to prominence occurs despite a current injury, having broken his clavicle during the U20 World Junior Championship. Despite the setback, Schaefer's impressive skills, speed, and size have undeniably left an impact. Born in 2007, Schaefer is set to become one of the youngest players chosen in the 2025 draft, boasting a remarkable 2024-25 OHL season before his injury.
The 6-foot-2, 183-pound blueliner displays exceptional decision-making capabilities, excelling at both ends of the ice. His career-defining moments have occurred on the international stage, where he's garnered gold medals with Canada at multiple U17, U18, and Hlinka Gretzky Cup competitions.
The 2025 draft class is filled with promising talent, highlighted by the 2025's top-ranked North American goaltender from North Vancouver, B.C., Joshua Ravensbergen. Other standout players include Porter Martone, currently leading the OHL with 35 goals, and James Hagens, who's an outstanding skater with elite offensive instincts.

Central Scouting's mid-term rankings also place Canadian forwards Michael Misa and Roger McQueen in the top five. Martin Marr, director of NHL Central Scouting, acknowledged the class's top-heavy talent and volatility. While Hagens has slipped in the rankings, his teammate James has maintained his shine, slotting in second position.
International prospects like Swedish teammates Victor Eklund and Anton Frondell from Djurgardens, who currently ranks as the top international skater, add diversity to the draft class, balancing the North American dominance.
The official location, date, and format of the 2025 NHL draft have yet to be announced, but sources hint at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles as the potential venue. The draft will take place in June, and preliminary rankings will be released by NHL Central Scouting in mid-April.
