Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping recognize a positive progression in their respective countries' relationship, according to the Ministry of External Affairs.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping met on August 31, 2025, in Tianjin, China, during the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit. The meeting marked a significant step forward in India-China relations, which have returned to a positive track.

Both leaders welcomed the positive momentum and steady progress in bilateral relations since their last meeting in Kazan in October 2024. The relationship between the two countries, with a combined population of 2.8 billion people, is crucial for a multipolar world and a multi-polar Asia.

During the meeting, Prime Minister Modi emphasized the importance of peace and tranquillity in the border areas for the continued development of bilateral relations. The border between India and China remains peaceful and stable, a testament to the efforts of both nations. The leaders agreed to support the efforts of the Special Representatives further in maintaining this peace.

The discussions between the two leaders were focused on the trends of the 21st century. They reaffirmed that the two countries are development partners and not rivals. The leaders noted with satisfaction the successful disengagement last year and the maintenance of peace and tranquillity along the border areas since then.

Both leaders recognised the important decisions taken by the two Special Representatives in their talks earlier this month. They expressed a commitment to a fair, reasonable, and mutually acceptable resolution of the boundary question.

The meeting also saw the leaders focusing on enhancing bilateral trade, with an emphasis on improving India's trade balance. They discussed strengthening people-to-people ties, cooperation on trans-border rivers, and joint counter-terrorism efforts.

Prime Minister Modi invited President Xi Jinping to the 2026 BRICS Summit in India, aiming to deepen strategic autonomy and development partnership without involving third-party influence.

The commitment to strengthening India-China relations is based on the political perspective of their overall bilateral relations and the long-term interests of the two peoples. The leaders emphasized that their differences should not turn into disputes.

A significant development from the meeting is the imminent resumption of direct flights between India and China. These achievements in India-China relations will not only benefit the people of both countries but also the world. The stable and amicable relationship between India and China is considered important for the growth and development of the two countries.

As per a statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China, PM Modi said that his meeting with President Xi Jinping in Kazan charted the course for the development of India-China relations. The leaders' commitment to peace, development, and mutual understanding bodes well for the future of India-China relations.
