India's Textile Ministry Boosts Sustainable Cotton with 'Cotton 2040' Initiative

The Ministry of Textiles and CITI recently hosted 'Cotton 2040: Technology, Climate & Competitiveness', culminating in the signing of multiple Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) under the Kasturi Cotton Bharat initiative. This event marked a significant step towards boosting sustainable cotton production and strengthening India's global cotton footprint.

Union Minister of Textiles Giriraj Singh, who referred to cotton as the 'soul of Indian agriculture', expressed his vision to make the textile sector carbon-neutral by 2030. The event saw prominent organizations like Arvind Ltd, Nitin Spinners, RSR International, All India Cotton FPO Association, Beetle Regen, ICAR-CIRCOT, Hohenstein, and Noida Apparel Export Cluster signing MoUs to promote sustainable cotton production.

The government's ambitious goal is to transform the USD 100 billion textile industry into a USD 350 billion sector, with sustainability at its core. Neelam Shami Rao highlighted the significance of the cotton sector, supporting six million farmers and providing employment to over 45 million people. The government has consistently increased the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for cotton to support farmers. The Mission for Cotton Productivity aims to triple productivity from around 450 kg per hectare to 2,000 kg, further strengthening farmer welfare. Pabitra Margherita emphasized India's aim for leadership in quality, sustainability, and ethical production in the textile sector.

Giriraj Singh urged stakeholders to make Kasturi Cotton Bharat a globally recognized benchmark for purity and sustainability. With the signing of these MoUs, India takes a significant stride towards achieving its textile industry goals, ensuring a sustainable future for cotton farmers and the textile sector.
