Ineos Shuts Down German Plant: A Setback for European Chemical Industry

Ineos-affiliated facility shuts down operations in Gladbeck - Ineos Branch Stops Operations at Gladbeck Facility

Here's the lowdown on Ineos, a colossal chemical conglomerate, pulling the plug on one of its phenol plants situated in Gladbeck, Germany. This move will leave 279 employees without a job, as the company announced its decision to halt production.

You might be wondering, "What's the big deal with phenol?" Well, it's an essential intermediate in the manufacturing of plastics and a significant player in the chemical landscape.

So, why is Europe bidding farewell to this critical component? The culprits? Skyrocketing energy costs and stringent CO2 tax policies have made it challenging for Europe to compete with Chinese imports, given global oversupply conditions.

Ineos has initiated meetings with the works council, employees, customers, and suppliers to discuss the next steps. However, they haven't set a date for the shutdown as yet, and work will continue as usual until then.

You might be wondering if this is a complete exit for Ineos from the phenol market in Europe. Not quite! Production will continue at the second phenol division site in Antwerp. But, due to low demand and the economic infeasibility of running both plants simultaneously, the Gladbeck site was given the ax. In fact, Ineos announced back in January that it would temporarily reduce production in Gladbeck.

The Gladbeck plant, a veteran in the chemical industry, established in 1954, churns out phenol and acetone – substances that play essential roles in the production of headlights, brake pads for vehicular applications, industrial solvents, and more. The site's annual production capacity hovers around 650,000 tonnes.

The closure of this plant presents concerns for not only the European automotive and electronics sectors but also the wind energy industry. Furthermore, it signals vulnerabilities in European supply chains that might lead to increased reliance on imports, particularly from China. This shift could potentially raise costs for downstream plastic producers in Europe.

Those wary of deindustrialization will eye the comments made by Ineos' chairman, Jim Ratcliffe, who criticized Europe's energy and carbon taxation policies for driving deindustrialization. Ratcliffe warned that decisions like this one might be the tip of the iceberg unless regulatory action is taken to enhance Europe's energy competitiveness.

In a silver lining, Ineos plans to continue serving global customers and will restart phenol production at its Antwerp site by 2027, suggesting a strategic shift rather than a complete exit from the phenol market in Europe.
