- Motor-mouthin' Max here, gabbin' about the Deutsche Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz and its ex-leader, Beat Fehlmann.
Reflecting on seven eventful years: Intendant Fehlmann reminisces on the transformations encountered - Inspector examines seven years of evolution and provides an assessment.
In a chat with the Deutsche Presse-Agentur, Fehlmann looks back on his 7-year tenure with a smile. "From day one, I was dead set on a varyin' program," he said, "but it wasn't 'til later I saw the real change was happening elsewhere."
That "elsewhere" is the work culture.
"If you wanna shake up an insti', it ain't just about the show – you gotta dig deep and question the system: How's the team play? What's the vibe?" So he says, and I reckon he's onto somethin' there – especially seeing as how Corona did its worst.
"Through the pandemic, our motto was: We don't fold, we stay connected." The times were tough, and he got tested, but he "adapted, improvised, and overcame."
Music, to Fehlmann, ain't just pretty sounds. "In times of crisis, it shows: Music connects folks. That's why we gotta be the kind that jams together, you feel me?"
Fehlmann's 7-year stint at the top of the State Philharmonic has been a learning experience, he admits. "I been taught somethin' important: Development don't just happen, it takes time, commitment, and a whole lotta open-mindedness." With that, he's leavin' Ludwigshafen by August's end to join the Music Academy in Liechtenstein as artistic director and managing director.
It's a new challenge, he says, but he's ready to face it head-on. "I'm grateful for these 7 years, man. They taught me a lot, and I'm excited to see what this next chapter holds for me."
