In a comprehensive nationwide survey, ACE discovered a severe deficit of parking spots for trucks on highways in Lower Saxony. The situation is so dire that they've dubbed it an "extreme shortage." During the inspection period from April to June, the occupancy rate of parking areas averaged a staggering 150 percent, meaning they were packed to the brim!
Curious about how this revelation came about? Volunteers from ACE conducted inspections at 13 highway rest areas on the A2 and A7 motorways between April 15 and June 3. On workdays from 20:30 onwards, they surveyed 690 parking spaces, only to find 1,032 parked trucks – a clear indication of overcrowding. In 77 percent of the inspected parking areas, trucks were even parked in entrance and exit lanes or on the hard shoulder.
Guess where the highest occupancy rates were reported? At the Zweidorfer Holz Süd service area on the A2 between Peine and Braunschweig, where a whopping 195 trucks were parked in just 94 spaces, resulting in an occupancy rate of 207 percent! Nationwide, the occupancy rate was still a hefty 151 percent, with 5,088 parking spaces vs. 7,664 parked trucks.
ACE: Interpret observations with caution
Remember, the observations were only snapshots, so it's essential not to overanalyze individual findings, according to an ACE spokesperson. However, they cautiously affirm that there's a general shortage of parking spaces. To address this issue, the association advocates for the creation of tens of thousands of additional truck parking spaces nationwide, as well as developing particularly hazardous areas used for emergency parking.
